General Terms and Conditions

The web-site enforces a maximum limit on number of pictures per section. The participant can remove a picture and upload a different one any time till the last date for submission.

SALON RULES

What's New

We have made a few changes from the previous Salons that is worth noting. We encourage you to read the remaining terms and conditions and familiarize yourself.

  • This Salon has Digital & Print categories. Additional Rules have been added to handle print submissions.
  • Rules have been modified to disqualify the following types of pictures for this Salon:
    1. Pictures of women/men in partial or full nudity that may be inappropriate for view by people of all ages.
    2. Pictures of bird nests and other similar pictures that may endanger the lives of the subject.
    3. Pictures of animals and birds in captivity.
    4. Pictures already accepted in earlier YPS Salons are not allowed to be uploaded to this Salon. This is in line with the Rules laid out by many of the organizations that have provided patronage to this Salon. To help participants recall their pictures that have been accepted in the past YPS Salons, we have added a facility to view their pictures accepted in YPS Salons since 2016, where they have participated using the same email ID. The final responsibility of adhering to this Rule is with the participant.

General Terms and Conditions

Eligibility

  • Photographers from any Country - Photographers of any country or origin are allowed to participate in the Salon.
  • Persons in the restricted lists - Persons in the restricted lists, that is, lists restricting persons from reporting acceptance, in whichever name they are called, to the organizations that have extended Patronage to this Salon, cannot participate in this Salon.
  • Jury/Salon Committee excluded - Members of the Jury and members of the Salon Organizing Committee shall not participate in the Salon.
  • Only one registration per person - Each person can participate under only one identification. Creating multiple log-ins under different emails of the same person is prohibited.

Registering & Uploading

  • Register with complete and correct details - At the time of registering please make sure that details entered are complete and correct. YPS will not be responsible for inconveniences caused on account of incorrect details entered while registering.
  • Fees must be paid upfront - Participants will be able to upload pictures only after payment of required fees.
  • Fees Non-Refundable - Fees, once paid, are not refundable for any reason.
  • Submission only through web-site - Only pictures submitted through this website will be considered for the contest. Pictures received through emails or other means will not be considered for the contest. Please check section related to prints to understand how to submit prints.
  • Upload under correct sections - It is the responsibility of the participants to upload the photographs under the correct section. Photographs not matching the section under which they are uploaded will be disqualified during judging. Please verify the sections after uploading to make sure that you have uploaded under correct sections. The Salon website offers features to remove an uploaded picture or move a picture to another section any time till the last date for submission. If there is a doubt about whether a picture will qualify under a section, please refer to the definition of the sections available on this web-site.
  • Participation can be increased - If the participant had initially opted to participate only under some of the sections, he/she can increased the participation any time till the last date of submission by paying the required additional fee.
  • Applicability of Early Bird or Regular Fees - This Salon offers significantly reduced Early Bird Salon Fees. A person's eligibility to avail Early Bird Fees is determined by the date on which the participant makes the first payment. The Salon will continue to offer the Early Bird rates even if the participant wants to add more sections after the Early Bird Last Date.

Uploading pictures that qualify

  • JPEG files in sRGB color gamut - The pictures uploaded should be in JPEG format. The projection equipment used during judging are calibrated to display pictures in sRGB gamut correctly. Please make sure that the color profile of your pictures is sRGB.
  • Maximum width 1920 pixels, Maximum height 1200 pixels - Pictures should not exceed 1920 pixels on the width and should not exceed 1200 pixels on the height. The dimensions are checked at the time of uploading. Non-conforming pictures will not be uploaded. Pictures will be projected in their 100% resolution. Pictures in lower resolution will appear smaller.
  • Correct Orientation - Pictures will be displayed in the same orientation in which it was uploaded. Hence please correct the orientation and resize before uploading.
  • No identification marks on the picture - The picture, digital or print, should not contain any added text/image that shows the title, name, logo or other forms of watermark on the face of the picture.
  • Enter Complete and Correct particulars about picture - Please make sure that the Title and other details required while uploading a picture, are entered properly. The system allows you to edit the Title any time till the last date for submission.
  • Using Consistent Titles - Salon Patronage organizations expect participants to use the same title for a picture in all the salons in which they participate so that they can count the number of acceptances for awarding honors. In this connection, please note that most organizations treat a monochrome image and a color image from the same capture are considered the same image and the title also must be the same.
  • All Images must include an image title - Entries without a title are not accepted. If proper titles are not provided on or before the day/s of the judging, those images shall not be presented to the jury or will be rejected during judging. In such cases with invalid titles, the same will not be validated for PSA Star rating or included in the Who’s Who publication.
  • Submit correct titles for images - While we do monitor and screen entries for invalid titles, it is the responsibility of the entrant to mention accurate titles during the time of uploading his/her entries. YPS will not create titles of images entered by the entrant/s.
  • Post-processing and subject fitment - Please refer to descriptions of individual sections for understanding subject matter fitment and restrictions on post-processing.
  • DPI does not matter - It does not matter what the DPI setting of your picture is. Any value should be fine.
  • NO NUDES - This Salon does not accept pictures that contain women/men in partial or full nudity that are not appropriate for view by people of all ages.
  • Pictures endangering nature are not allowed - Pictures of bird nests or similar other pictures that may endanger the lives of the subject are not allowed for submission.
  • Validate Print-readiness - Award winning pictures will be on display at the Salon Exhibition. If you want your picture to be displayed at the exhibition, you should be in a position to upload pictures with more than 3000 pixels on the long-side when requested. Pictures less than this resolution will not be printed.
  • Upload well-ahead of the last date - Please update the pictures well ahead of time. YPS will not be responsible for inability of the participant to upload pictures before the last date for submission. YPS will not entertain any claim for refund of entry fee on the grounds of inability to upload before the last date.
  • Pictures already accepted in YPS Salons are not eligible - Pictures that have already been accepted in the past YPS Salons are not eligible to be submitted again on this Salon. The rule applies irrespective of the title under which it was submitted or the category under which it was submitted. Participants will be required to confirm this while uploading. To help participants recall their pictures that have been accepted in the past YPS Salons, we have added a facility to view their pictures accepted in YPS Salons since 2016, where they have participated using the same email ID. The final responsibility of adhering to this Rule is with the participant.

Submitting Pictures under Print Sections

  • All prints submitted should match a digital submission - Before mailing prints, a digital version of the picture must be uploaded on to the website with Title and other details required. After upload, the system will generate an "8 digit Code" to be mentioned on the back of the print. Prints submitted without a digital version will not be projected. Also, the digital version will not be used for any purpose except for reference and digital scoring. If the print is not received in time, the Digital Version will still not be used in the judging.
  • YPS does not undertake printing - YPS does not undertake printing of any pictures for participants. However, YPS may advertise names of reputed printers in India through whom the participants can get their pictures printed and submitted. The details will be published on YPS website. The participants are free to use the services of any other Printers as well. Please note that YPS will not be part of or responsible for any consequences arising out of such printing arrangement including quality of prints and timely delivery of prints to YPS.
  • Prints should be 18 inches on the long side - Prints should be 18 inches on the long side inclusive of any borders. Prints of other dimensions will be rejected.
  • Mark Print Packages to avoid customs problems - Print package shall be marked "FOR EXHIBIT ONLY, NO COMMERCIAL VALUE". YPS is not responsible for paying forms of Government Fees like Customs Fees associated with shipping of prints.
  • Glossy, Matt and Archive Prints allowed - Prints can be submitted in Glossy Photo Paper or Matt Photo Paper of Archival Paper. Other forms of print media like Canvas are not allowed.
  • Prints should not be mounted or framed.
  • No watermarks/text on the face is allowed - The prints submitted should not have any text or watermark on the face of the print. The title of the picture will be taken from the digital entry submitted and should not be specified either on the face or the back.
  • Mention correct Upload Code - Please mention the correct 8 Digit Code on the back of the print. The status of receipt of print would be updated on the website.
  • Prints will not be returned - Prints submitted for the Salon will not be returned. The entrant must, in the entry submittal form in the space provided, to verify/confirm authorization for the exhibition to destroy the exhibitor's prints in lieu of returning them.
  • Only Pressure-sensitive labels - If the participant wants to use a label to affix the 8 Digit code to the print, such label should be made of pressure-sensitive / self-adhesive type.

Publishing Results

  • Jury Panel has the final say - The decision of the Panel of Judges is final and binding with respect to selection of pictures for awards. No further appeal questioning the correctness of decisions will be entertained.
  • Web-site will display results - This Salon website will be the primary channel for release of results followed by emails to all the winners.
  • Digital Catalog - Youth Photographic Society will issue a Digital Exhibition Catalog to all entrants. The same can be downloaded from the web-site. YPS will not be printing physical catalogs to save paper and the trees.

Legal Requirements & Disclaimers

  • Pictures must originate as Photographs - All entries submitted must have originated as photographs. That is, images of subjects are captured via light sensitive on photographic emulsion or are captured digitally using a camera equipment. All final work submitted must be on electronic file.
  • Originality & Ownership - By submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as his/her own (aliases and proxies are not permitted). In the case of composite images created from multiple photographs, all photographic components used in the composite-image must have been photographed by the entrant and the entrant must hold copyright for all the components included in the picture.
  • Right to use - The entrant permits Youth Photographic Society to reproduce all or part of any of the photographs entered for the contest, free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to any activities of Youth Photographic Society.
  • Misuse - While YPS takes all precautions to prevent misuse of pictures submitted to the Salon, YPS assumes no responsibility related to any misuse of pictures in violation of the copyright held by the owner.
  • Data Protection - By entering this exhibition, you are explicitly consenting to the personal details you have supplied, including email addresses, being held, processed and used by the exhibition organizers for purposes associated with this exhibition. You also explicitly consent to such information being sent to organizations that have accorded official recognition, patronage or accreditation to this exhibition. You acknowledge and accept that entering this exhibition means that the status and results of your entry may be made public.

Agreement to Terms & Conditions

By entering this exhibition, you are explicitly consenting to the personal details you have supplied, including email addresses, being held, processed and used by the exhibition organizers for purposes associated with this exhibition. You also explicitly consent to such information being sent to organizations that have accorded official recognition, patronage or accreditation to this exhibition. You acknowledge and accept that entering this exhibition means that the status and results of your entry may be made public.

When an entrant fills in the Entry Form to submit an entry the entrant will see a feature to affirm, he or she has read these Conditions of Entry when he or she fills out the entry form. If the entrant does not so affirm the entry will not be submitted.

All entries shall conform to the stricter of these definitions for acceptances to be validated by all the International Organizations granting recognition or patronage.

Non-Compliance to Salon Terms and Conditions

If at any time, it is determined in the reasonable discretion of the exhibition organizer or the judges before, during, or after the judging of an exhibition that an entrant has submitted entries where one or more images may fail to comply with these Conditions of Entry, including the stated definitions, the exhibition organizers reserve the right to delete the entry from the exhibition and void any or all acceptances or awards in connection with the exhibition. Fees may be forfeited or refunded in these circumstances. The entrant acknowledges that the decision of the exhibition organizers or the judges is final.

In order to ensure that images comply with the Conditions of Entry and definitions, the exhibition organizers may carry out reasonable measures to verify that:

  • the images are the original work of the entrant and
  • the images comply with the rules and definitions as set out in these Conditions of Entry.

These steps include, but are not limited to, questioning any entrant, requiring the submission of RAW files or other digital files representing the original capture of the submitted image(s), confronting the entrant with evidence that one or more submitted images fails to comply with the Conditions of Entry (also known as Entry Rules), and offering the entrant a reasonable opportunity to provide counter evidence to refute the exhibition organizer’s evidence by a set deadline. Such entries that are not cleared or are still questionable after the entrant has presented evidence may be considered in breach of these Conditions of Entry and declined. Such entries may be referred to PSA for further investigation of possible ethics violations.

PSA retains the right to investigate in any way all complaints/suspicions of breaches of entry conditions, impose sanctions if deemed necessary, void the acceptances of any image found to violate the PSA rules, include the entrant’s name on the list of sanctions provided to Exhibitions, and share such investigations with FIAP. Entrants automatically agree to these terms by the act of entering the Exhibition and agree to cooperate with any investigation.

Each Entrant to the Salon must observe the rules of FIAP whether or not he is a member of FIAP. By the sole act of submitting his/her images to this Salon, which enjoys FIAP patronage, the entrant,

  • Acknowledges and accepts that when breaching FIAP regulations he can be sanctioned by FIAP and
  • Accepts without exception and with no objection the general and specific rules concerning the sanctions for breaching FIAP regulations published by FIAP in the document “DOC 017/2017 E” published by FIAP.

By the sole act of submitting his/her images or files to a salon under FIAP Patronage, the entrant accepts without exception and with no objection that the submitted images can be investigated by FIAP to establish if these obey to FIAP regulations and definitions even if the entrant is not a member of FIAP; that FIAP will use any means at its disposal for this undertaking; that any refusal to cooperate with FIAP or any refusal to submit the original files as captured by the camera, or failure to provide sufficient evidence, will be sanctioned by FIAP and that in case of sanctions following the non-compliance with FIAP regulations, the name of the entrant will be released in any form useful to inform the breaches of the rules. It is recommended to leave the EXIF data in the submitted files intact in order to ease eventual investigations.

Guidelines and Rules from organizations providing Patronage

Photographic Society of America (FIAP)

The exhibition is open to anyone; however, an entry may be rejected when the sponsoring organization or its agent, in its reasonable discretion, believes the entry does not conform to the exhibition rules and conditions.

An entrant’s images will not be presented to the judges consecutively. An entrant’s four images will be distributed throughout four rounds of judging in that section. Distribution of images shall be in the same round order as submitted by the entrant.

Entries must originate as photographs (image-captures of objects via light sensitivity) made by the entrant on photographic emulsion or acquired digitally. By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as his own (aliases are not permitted). The entrant permits the sponsors to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the exhibition. This may include low resolution posting on a website. Note: Entrants who indicate that their images may not be reproduced or used “will not be eligible for awards” or inclusion in audio-visuals of the exhibition “and could be subject to disqualification” by the exhibition sponsors.

The exhibition assumes no liability of any misuse of copyright. Images may be altered, either electronically or otherwise, by the maker. Artwork or computer graphics created by the entrant may be incorporated provided the photographic content predominates, subject to Nature, Photo Travel and Photojournalism divisional restrictions. All final work must be on photographic film, or on electronic file, or on photographic or electronic print material, mounting excepted.

No title or identification of the maker shall be visible anywhere on the face of an image, print mat or mount entered in a PSA Recognized exhibition.

Each image must have a unique title. Once an image has been accepted in a PSA Recognized exhibition, that same image, or a like “in camera” or a “reproduction” duplicate of that image:

  1. May not be entered or re-entered in any section of the same Division Star Ratings class in that exhibition regardless of media, format, or title.
  2. May not be re-titled for entry in any other PSA Recognized exhibition, including translation into another language.
  3. Images meeting the Monochrome Definition and non-manipulated colour images from the same capture shall be considered the same image and must be given the same title.

Words such as “Untitled” and “No Title” are not acceptable as part or all of an image’s title, nor are camera capture filenames.

An image may be entered in only one section where acceptances of that image in multiple sections would be eligible for the same star path.

Federation Internationale De L`Art Photographique (FIAP)

All Entrants to this Salon must observe the rules of FIAP and conform to the regulations of the present document FIAP document 017/2017 Sanctions for breaching FIAP regulations and the red list and must be aware of chapter II Regulations for International photographic events under FIAP patronage of FIAP document 018/2017, dealing under Section II.2 and II.3 with the FIAP participation rules, the sanctions for breaching FIAP regulations and the red list.

Definition

COLOR OPEN refers to pictures in full or partial color covering any subject other than Monochrome, Nature and Travel which are covered under different sections. The pictures may be of any genre like Portraits, Pictorial, Landscape and Creative Pictures.

  • Digital Creation Pictures are allowed under this section provided they conform to the condition that the entry must have one or more elements that have originated as photographs.

Definition

An image is considered to be Monochrome only if it gives the impression of having no color (that is, contains only shades of gray which can include pure black and pure white) OR it gives the impression of being a gray-scale image that has been toned in one color across the entire image. (For example by Sepia, red, gold, etc.)

  • The pictures may be of any genre such as Portraits, Pictorial or Landscape. Please consult the list of awards to select your pictures to submit.
  • Digital Creation Pictures are allowed under this section provided they conform to the condition that the entry must have one or more elements that have originated as photographs.
  • MONOCHROME images should not be entered in COLOR section.
  • A gray-scale or a multi-colored image, modified or giving the impression of having been modified, by partial toning, multi-toning or by the inclusion of spot coloring does not meet the definition of MONOCHROME.

Definition

NATURE photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archeology, in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation.

Rules
  • NATURE section accommodates controlled environment - Images entered in NATURE section meeting the Nature Photography Definition above can have landscapes, geological formations, weather phenomena, and extant organisms as the primary subject matter. This contest does not allow pictures of animals and birds in captivity, such as zoos and game farms. Pictures of other subjects in controlled conditions, such as botanical gardens, aquariums and any enclosure where the subjects, other than animals and birds, are totally dependent on man for food.
  • WILDLIFE under NATURE should be presented in uncontrolled free environment - WILDLIFE Images entered under NATURE sections meeting the Nature Photography Definition above are further defined as one or more extant zoological or botanical organisms free and unrestrained in a natural or adopted habitat. Photographs of zoo animals or game farm animals, or of any extant zoological or botanical species taken under controlled conditions are not eligible for WILDLIFE awards in NATURE section.
  • What is WILDLIFE - WILDLIFE is not limited to mammals, birds and insects. Marine subjects and botanical subjects (including fungi and algae) taken in the wild are suitable wildlife subjects, as are carcasses of extant species.
  • NO man-made elements - Human or man-made elements shall not be present in the picture, except where those elements are integral parts of the story of the picture. An example would be a picture of barn owls or other birds living in an environment modified by humans after having adapted their life to such an environment. Another exception would be inclusion of humans, human/man-made elements in situations depicting natural forces, such as hurricanes or tidal waves.
  • NO tags or chains - Pictures of animals/birds with scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars or other restraints such as chain are NOT permissible.
  • NO domesticated subjects or subjects in captivity - Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals and mounted specimens are NOT permissible. Photographs showing subjects in captivity are not allowed.
  • Pictures taken in situations that endanger the subject are not allowed e.g. Birds in nest.
  • NO Infrared Pictures - Infrared images, either direct-captures or derivations, are not allowed.
  • NO Digital Creation Pictures - Digital Creation pictures are NOT allowed under this section.
  • MONOCHROME allowed - Nature Color images can be converted to gray-scale monochrome.
  • Post-processing for Natural Presentation permitted - Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph while preserving the nature story, original scene and the pictorial content are permitted. This includes basic post-processing techniques such as Cropping, Burning, Dodging, Exposure correction, hue/saturation adjustments, sharpening and noise reduction, and advanced techniques such as spot removal, HDR, Luminosity Masks and Focus Stacking. Final image presented must appear natural.
  • Post-processing that changes the scene are not permitted - Techniques that add, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements (except by cropping) are NOT permitted. Stitching and making composite images, not falling under the advanced techniques listed above, are NOT permitted.

Definition

A TRAVEL image expresses the characteristic features or culture of a land as they are found naturally in those places.

Rules
  • Can be from anywhere - There are no geographic limitations. Pictures could have been shot anywhere on earth or in space.
  • No images from organized events - Images from events or activities arranged specifically for photography, or of subjects directed or hired for photography are NOT allowed.
  • Portraits must depict features or culture - Portraits of people or objects must depict features that provide information about the land.
  • Only Post-processing for Factual Presentation permitted - Techniques that add, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image (except by cropping) are not permitted. Techniques that result in restoration of the appearance of the original scene are permitted. This includes basic post-processing techniques such as Cropping, Burning, Dodging, Exposure correction, hue/saturation adjustments, sharpening and noise reduction, and advanced techniques such as spot removal, HDR, Luminosity Masks and Focus Stacking. Final image presented must present the scene in its natural form.
  • MONOCHROME allowed - Color images can be converted to gray-scale monochrome.
  • NO Infrared Pictures - Infrared images, either direct-captures or derivations, are not allowed.

Youth Photographic Society

Youth Photographic Society (YPS) Bengaluru, the hosts for this contest, is a not-for-profit organization started in 1971 to further the Art of Photography. With over 400 members, YPS is among the largest Photography Clubs in India and also boasts of hosting 44 National and International Salons. It has been nurtured by doyens of Indian Photography like Late Mr. T N A Perumal, Late Mr. E Hanumantha Rao and Late Mr. C Rajagopal. The club conducts regular slide-shows on every first and third Saturday of the month, alongside exhibitions and workshops, for the benefit of its members.
